Second Volgograd International festival of video art "Videology" has
started to accept works for contest programme. Works are accepted from
1st of July to 30th of September inclusive.

Festival "Videology" is a big event not only for Volgograd, but for all
Southern Russia. It is the first for many years large-scale festival of
modern art in region. We hope that festival of 2005 will continue the
newly-born tradition on a decent level and contribute to establishing
Volgograd as an important centre of modern art.

This year the festival will take a slogan "Personality. Community.
Territory". We invite all artists who work with experimental video, to
take part in "Videology" festival and to support our initiative. Here

We also invite artists from Germany to take part in topical festival of
German videoart "Open Look", which will be carried out by us in

national cultures of the region. Carrying out a festival of modern
German art on this historic territory with continue this old tradition
on a new level. Programme of German videoart festival "Open Look" will
be also presented later on at "Videology" festival. Terms of taking part
in the festival "Open Look" are the same as "Videology" festival.

FIVE HOLES: a matter of taste

FIVE HOLES is an ongoing series examining the
significance of the body and the senses. Fado
invites artists to submit proposals for a matter
of taste, the final installment in the FIVE HOLES
series. We seek performance art works, including
conceptual, site-responsive and
installation-based performances, that deal with
the sense of taste. Approximately seven proposals
will be chosen to create a simultaneous ensemble
of events to be held in the summer of 2006 in
Toronto. The focus will be on Canadian artists
(i.e. at least four of the projects will feature
Canadian artists).

Taste is perhaps the most 'personal' of all the
senses. It is both primal -- providing the
impulses that drive consumption -- and
individualized: one person's desire is another's
poison. While the word 'taste' is often
associated with the concept of aesthetic
discernment, a matter of taste places its
emphasis on a specific, visceral definition of
taste: the perception of flavour (and perhaps
texture) that takes place inside our mouths. This
series will focus on projects that explore the
implications of a sense that operates through the
placement of foreign material inside one's body.

a matter of taste is not concerned with the
familiar social terrain of banquets and dinner
parties so much as the links between physical
sensation, unconscious/conscious drives, and our
mouths as a point of contact with the external
world. How does one orchestrate a performance for
another's mouth? What are the dynamics that
seduce, persuade or convince others to put things
in their mouths? What intentions are bound up in
the impulse to stimulate one's taste buds? What
does our sense of taste reveal about our internal
desires and external projections?

TORONTO, Canada ... IDea is an multi-year
international performance art series focused on
issues of identity. Fado seeks proposals for
performance art projects for the 2006-07 season
of IDea, including conceptual, site-responsive
and installation-based performances.

Chris Barker writes that cultural politics are
about "the power to name; the power to represent
common sense; the power to create 'official
versions'; and the power to represent the
legitimate social world." These powers speak to
identity in a territorial, institutionalized
framework, but performance practices offer the
possibility of turning their presumed weaknesses
-- contingency, ephemerality and aterritoriality
-- into strengths, by offering a potentially
decolonized, non-institutional forum.
The concept of identity has been at the forefront
of art discourse since the 1980s. Performance
artists have been particularly concerned with how
our various identities are constructed, how they
mark us and how they influence
self-understanding. At the same time, artists
have also used performance tactics to
problematize and transform their identities. In
recent years, the debate has shifted to examine
identity issues in subtler, less didactic ways,
using the territory of identity as a ground for
complex and often ambivalent readings of
subjectivity, hybridity and representation. IDea
seeks to add to this growing body of work.

The series considers a broad range of identity
labels, including gender, skin colour, ethnic
origin, religion, sexual orientation, physical
appearance, familial role, economic status,
political affiliation and profession, to name a
few of the more obvious possibilities. In blunt
terms, the series will circulate around an
underlying set of interrelated questions. How do
we accept or resist these multiple identities?
Which do we choose to embrace, and why? What
identity labels are misleading, unhelpful or
irrelevant, and in what ways? How do these labels
intersect with one another? How do they determine
the nature and quality of our lives? How do they
contribute to a sense of belonging or alienation?

While these questions inform the series, they are
only a contextualizing lens, not a prescription
for how individual projects should or will be
structured. IDea is not about representation, or
the politics of difference, which is to say that
the intention is not to assemble a collection
that presents one of each kind. We are not
encouraging strident political statements (though
there is certainly room for them), but rather,
featuring works that reveal something about how
the creators understand and situate themselves.
Along the way, we also hope to track how artists
use performance tactics to circumvent prescribed
attitudes and behaviours around identity.

IDea seeks to consider a range of bodily
identities -- physical, social, political,
emotional, and spiritual. To provide further
context for the series, we will commission
critical texts that respond to each of the
performances. These texts will come from an
interdisciplinary variety of thinkers in the
realms of philosophy, religion, politics and
science.

Media Masquerade
The Inner Dialogue of women in masquerade

In feminist theory, the discussion of the
masquerade has raised questions about how
societal values constrain or release feminine
energies. Masks, costumes and the masquerade
represent forms of oppression in contemporary
society, yet during a Masquerade one is freed of
certain social, marital and feminine
expectations. Media Masquerade: The Inner
Dialogue of Women in Masquerade suggests that
true feminine-expression can flourish. The
Masquerade is a tool of self-expression and
contradicts the assumption that one is hindered
by the act of masquerading.

This Centre for Art Tapes event will have two
components: A two-week all-women installation of
multi-media projects in collaboration with the
Anna Leonowens Art Gallery connected to the Nova
Scotia College of Art University; and a closing
reception where music, dancing, costumes and
performance will close the Media Masquerade.
Media Masquerade: The Inner Dialogue of Women in
Masquerade is co-curated by Mib and Tania Sures.

feminine masquerade and its psychological
complexity.

The Galleria Civica di Arte Contemporanea di
Trento, in collaboration with drodesera>centrale
fies, with the support the of the Foundation
Cassa di Risparmio of Trento e Rovereto,
announces the "International Prize for
Performance".

The prize is reserved for young artists of all
nationalities who are no older than thirty-five
years old at the time of the expiration of the
present announcement.

Among those who would like to participate, 12
(twelve) finalists will be selected to present a
performance on the evenings of September 9th and
10th, 2005 in the Centrale di Fies (Dro, Trento).

The first prize is fixed at 5,000 (five-thousand)
euros (net) and can not be divided. There will
also be minor prizes awarded.

The competition has two entrance possibilities.
The first, for artists of all nationalities and
origins, is to send a specific project to the
Galleria Civica di Arte Contemporanea. The second
is reserved only for residents of Trentino-Alto
Adige, Veneto, Fruili - Venezia Giulia,
Lombardia, Emilia Romagna, Austrian Tyrol, who,
through a direct selection, will realize a
performance at the Galleria Civica di Arte
Contemporanea of Trento on Thursday and Friday
evenings from June 16th to July 21st, 2005.

All artists, of all nationalities and origins,
from all backgrounds (visual arts, dance,
theatre, music, poetry, etc.) are invited to
participate by completing the electronic
application located on the Galleria Civica di
Arte Contemporanea's website (directly send to
performance@galleriacivica.it).
In addition to the application, participants must send:
- a never before seen performance project
(descriptive, no longer than 3,000 characters,
spaces included; if necessary, also designs or
images);
- an artistic resume;
- a scan of a current identification document;
- two to four excerpts from previous performances
(in mpeg format, more or less one minute each).
Participants may also send, at their discretion,
descriptions of previous performances (no more
than three of narrative character, no longer than
1500 characters each one), and images (no more
than 10 total). Additionally, they may also send
no more than two reviews appearing in catalogues,
magazines or newspapers.
The paper material must be written in either Italian or English languages.
The video material may be sent in diverse
languages whenever the comprehension of
discourses is not considered a necessary element
in order to understand the sense of the
performance.
Together all of the sent material must not exceed 4 megabites.
The expiration date for the application and
materials is fixed at 5 PM on August 1st, 2005
(Italian time).

Among all projects presented in this modality,
eight will be chosen to be presented during the
final evenings.

The artists that reside in Trentino - Alto Adige,
Veneto, Fruili - Venezia Giulia, Emilia Romagna,
Austrian Tyrol, also have the possibility for a
privileged access road to the finals. They can
directly participate by presenting a performance
in the spaces furnished for the exhibition La
Galleria dell'Amore at the Galleria Civica,
curated by Marina Abramovic and realized by
members of IPG (Independent Performance Group), a
non-profit organization she founded in 2003. For
those who agree with this form of participation,
can utilize the same system by sending materials
according to this modality number six or
contacting the Galleria Civica directly at +39
0461 985511. Application acceptance is entirely
at the discretion of the Galleria Civica.

Of those who will present performances in the
evenings at the Galleria Civica, four artists or
groups of artists will be selected to participate
in the finals. The four selected are obliged to
present a never before seen project for the final
evenings.

The performances can be any length of time. They
may not succeed 20 minutes whenever it is dealt
with as a narrative performance, valued entirely
on its development. The performances can be
extensive in length as long as the concept is
comprehensible without needing to be viewed
entirely. It is also possible to present a
project consisting of more than one performance
whenever the comprehensive length will not exceed
20 minutes. The performance can be executed
directly by the artists, or with the intervention
of actors, musicians, or other personnel. They
can be conducted without the use of human beings
and it is also possible to involve the public. It
is also possible utilize video or other
technological interaction; however, only video or
video installation proposals are excluded.

The performances presented in the Galleria Civica
from July 16th - 21st, 2005 will be judged by a
local jury consisting of: Fabio Cavallucci
(Director of the Galleria Civica), Marco Tomasini
(collaborator of the Galleria Civica), Barbara
Boninsegna (drodesera>centrale fies), Dino
Sommadossi (drodesera>centrale fies), Orietta
Berlanda (art critic), Mariella Rossi (journalist
"Il Corriere del Trentino"), Denise Cattani
(journalist "L'Adige"), Tomasso Pasquini
(journalist "Il Trentino"), Raffaele Macrì
(video-theatrical troup Ziggurat).

The projects sent to the Galleria Civica will be
selected by August 16th, 2005 by an international
jury composed of Marina Abramovic (artist),
Renato Barilli (art critic), Mathias Lilienthal
(Director Hebbel Theater of Berlin), Andrea
Lissoni (Xing Association), Virgilio Sieni (dance

8. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: "Drive By Performance Series" (USA)

Links Hall and Seep request proposals for
site-specific work inside moving vehicles.
Artists may be drivers, passengers, or
instigators who are outside the car. Links Hall
will serve as a taxi stand from which audiences
can catch rides to experience each piece, but the
real location will be both inside the car and
simultaneously anywhere within driving distance.
There is a possibility that the car doesn't go
anywhere. There is a possibility that the car
drives to a specific place, or that it drives
around in circles. Maybe the performance gets
out of the car at a certain point, or maybe it is
an event which is best viewed from the window of
a speeding car. What is important is that
proposals are centered around the car as a place
and an idea.

Proposals should contain a 1-2 page overview,
resume, and work sample (DVD, NTSC VHS, photos,
slides, relevant notes, etc.) Also, please
indicate the following: approximate length of
piece (ideally 15 minutes to one hour), any
equipment needed, whether you are able to provide
your own car, whether the piece is repeatable,
dates of availability (for November 2005).
Audiences will be charged a small entry fee per
ride to cover gas, and to compensate you for your
work. While the aim is to explore radical
aesthetic possibilities of the car, please keep
in mind basic safety and feasibility on a limited
budget.

Submissions from outside Chicago:
We are open to proposals from anywhere, but
unfortunately cannot provide travel expenses. We
will secure informal accommodation for your stay
in Chicago, and we will assist you in any way we
can to secure funding from your own sources.
Proposals from within driving distance of Chicago
are especially welcome.

Drive By will be held on three Saturday afternoons: November 5/12/19, 2005.

11. NEWS: House of Commons Changes Criminal Code
to Eliminate Defence of Artistic Merit
Source: Ontario Association of Art Galleries

On Thursday, June 9, 2005, notwithstanding prior
advice over the past two years by arts service
organizations across Canada of significant
potential harm to Canadian visual artists and
galleries, the House of Commons of Canada passed
Bill C-2, An Act to amend the Criminal Code
(protection of children and other vulnerable
persons) and the Canada Evidence Act.

The Bill is in the process of Senate approval.

The Criminal Code was amended in this area in
1993 by a then-minority government. Within six
months of the amendment, Ontario police invoked
the opportunity of public response to an art
exhibition review in a national newspaper to lay
charges against both the exhibiting visual artist
and the director of a non-profit artist-run
centre in Toronto. Works of art seized in the
raid at the time of the charges were held for a
year and subjected to a trial to determine
whether or not they would be destroyed or
returned to the artist.

Bill C-2 further amends the Criminal Code of
Canada to eliminate the language of defence of
artistic merit and replace it with what is being
called the legitimate purpose defence.

Legitimate Purpose Defence: The legislation
narrows the test for the child pornography
defence. The new defence would only be available
if (1) the act in question has a legitimate
purpose related to the administration of justice,
or to science, medicine, education or art, and if
(2) the act does not pose an undue risk of harm
to children. This single legitimate purpose
defence incorporates the harm-based standard used
by the Supreme Court of Canada in upholding the
existing child pornography provisions in 2001.

The new Act broadens the definition of child
pornography to include both audio and written
material.

Bill C-2 criminalizes voyeurism. The new offences
prohibit secret observation (by any means) or
recording, in circumstances where there is a
reasonable expectation of privacy, in three cases:

when the person observed or recorded is in a
place where a person is expected to be in a state
of nudity, or engaged in sexual activity (such as
bedroom, bathroom or changing room); or
when the person is in a state of nudity or
engaged in sexual activity and the purpose is to
observe or record the person in such a state or
activity; or
when the observation or recording is done for a sexual purpose.

The second voyeurism offence involves
distribution of voyeuristic material and requires
that the accused knew the material was created
during one of the circumstances described above.

This enactment amends the Criminal Code to

written and audio material that constitutes child pornography,and with
respect to the child pornography offences,defences and penalties;

(b ) add a new category to the offence of sexual exploitation of young
persons and make additional amendments to further protect children from
sexual exploitation;

(c) increase the maximum penalty for child sexual offences,for failing to
provide the necessaries of life and for abandoning a child;

(d ) make child abuse an aggravating factor for the purpose of sentencing and
direct the courts to give primary consideration to the objectives of
denunciation and deterrence in sentencing for offences involving abuse of
a child;

(e) amend and clarify the applicable test and criteria that need to be met for
the use of testimonial aids,for excluding the public, for imposing a
publication ban, for using video-recorded evidence or for appointing counsel
for self-represented accused to conduct a cross-examination of certain
witnesses;and

(f )create an offence of voyeurism and the distribution of voyeuristic
material.

This enactment also amends the Canada Evidence Act to abolish the
requirement for a competency hearing for children under 14 years of age."

On June 29, 2005, Fado kicks off its new IDea
series with The Sun is Crooked in the Sky; My
Father is Thrown over my Shoulders a continuous
100-hour performance by Guatemalan-born Canadian
artist Naufus Ramirez-Figueroa.

The Sun is Crooked in the Sky; My Father is
Thrown over my Shoulders is a visceral, searching
visual and action-based exploration of aspects of
the artist's personal history. In his notes for
the performance, Ramirez-Figueroa writes:

"The artist's family, like many other Guatemalan
-- and Latin American -- families, has dealt with
common, though taboo issues of class and race
differences that have affected the family
dynamic. In the case of Ramirez-Figueroa there is
a history of indigenous women having the children
of whiter men, men who become fathers unwilling
to recognize the children as their own. By using
metaphorical elements of his childhood -- like
powdered milk -- and through sleep deprivation,
Ramirez-Figueroa will push the limits of his
endurance with the purpose of reaching an altered
state of consciousness through which to meditate
upon a genealogy of absent white fathers."

About the artist

Naufus Ramirez-Figueroa is a performance and
visual artist based in Vancouver. For the past 7
years he has performed and exhibited at various
Canadian artist-run centers and in galleries and
museums in Latin America. Ramirez-Figueroa's
work attempts to create an opening for dialogue
around ethics and inter-personal relations in
issues such as racial cleansing, economic
globalization, and love.

About the IDea series

Issues of identity are at the centre of IDea,
Fado's newest new multi-year international
performance art series. The concept of identity
has been at the forefront of art discourse since
the 1980s. Performance artists have been
particularly concerned with how our various
identities are constructed, how they mark us and
how they influence self-understanding. At the
same time, artists have also used performance
tactics to problematize and transform their
identities. In recent years, the debate has
shifted to examine identity issues in subtler,
less didactic ways, using the territory of
identity as a ground for complex and often
ambivalent readings of subjectivity, hybridity
and representation.

IDea considers a broad range of identity labels,
including gender, skin colour, ethnic origin,
religion, sexual orientation, physical
appearance, familial role, economic status,
political affiliation and profession, to name a
few of the more obvious possibilities. In blunt
terms, the series will circulate around an
underlying set of interrelated questions. How do
we accept or resist these multiple identities?
Which do we choose to embrace, and why? What
identity labels are misleading, unhelpful or
irrelevant, and in what ways? How do these labels
intersect with one another? How do they determine
the nature and quality of our lives? How do they
contribute to a sense of belonging or alienation?

Overview

Our First Amendment rights are no guarantee. In 2001, shortly
after the September 11th attacks, polls indicated that 50% of the U.S.
population agreed with the statement "The First Amendment goes too far
in the rights it guarantees." This dramatic climate change has a huge
impact on art, how it is made, exhibited, and discussed. Now, when
works by certain artists or of an indefinable political nature are
exhibited, we can virtually guarantee the Secret Service will show up.
Since September 11th, the media has reported a number of cases
of the Secret Service visiting art exhibitions based on citizens'
reports that artworks posed threats to the president and national
security. Steve Kurtz, a member of the artist collaborative Critical
Art Ensemble, was brought to trial on charges of bioterrorism (now
lessened to mail and wire fraud) after he called the police when he
woke to find his wife had died of a heart attack.
But often, no legal action is actually taken. Censorship
operates effectively at the level of a threat. Artists can feel the
threat of prosecution without knowing what they would possibly be
prosecuted for.

Now while this is certainly a frightening development, it does
afford the possibility of an exhibition that raises public awareness of
the current retreat of our most basic rights. A Knock at the Door is
this exhibition. Anchored with works and artists already targeted by
the Secret Service, the show expands to show how, with no
accountability required of the federal government, any cultural
activity could come under investigation. A Knock at the Door
challenges the assumption that there is a clear line defining so-called
"threatening" or "Un-American" art and activity, and that all art is an
expression of the most basic foundation of a democratic society - the
free expression and exchange of ideas.

How Does it Work?

The exhibition will take place in several locations through the
city, all running concurrently and close to the anniversary of
September 11th. Each of these exhibits will contain some work that has
been targeted by the Secret Service, but which work this is will not be
publicly revealed. It will be mixed in with works by everyone from
students to major artists. Books, music, etc. will also be on display
to sink home the fact that infractions against the First Amendment are
not isolated.
In the center of each exhibit will be a simple closed
information booth. Visitors will be able to enter this small booth and
pick up information about their First Amendment rights and a wide
spectrum of relevant cases and news reports. This booth will simple to
transport and install allowing it recontextualize virtually any exhibit
where it is placed.

STRP art & technology festival : CALL FOR PROJECTS - Deadline 1 JULY

The first edition of the STRP festival will take place in

Eindhoven(Netherlands) between the 18th and 20th of November 2005. Its

focus is on the commonalities between art, popular culture and

technology. As part of the festival there will be performances,

exhibits and presentations in a historical space. STRP will take place

on the 'holy' ground of the forbidden city of Philips, where in the

20th century numerous technological innovations were made. A place

where Einstein worked at one point and where one of the most ambitious

amalgamations of the arts and technology took place: "Poeme

Electronique," a collaboration between the architect LeCorbusier with

architect/composer Iannis Xenakis, artist Jean Petit, composer Edgard

Varese and filmmaker Phillipe Agostini. Coincidence or not, Dick

Pixel Pops: Prepare, Post, Present

Gallery exhibition during the month of October 2005 in New Haven,

Connecticut at City Gallery. This is an artist organized exhibition,

coordinated by digital artists Colleen Tully and Cynthia Beth Rubin.

There are no fees to enter.

The Gallery will be equipped with 3 flat screen monitors to display a

variety of screen-based digital works. All work must show evidence of

extensive computer manipulation or be otherwise highly digital.

Acceptable Formats:

--Web-based Works (no live internet available)

--Short Videos & Animations (1 minute preferred, will accept up to 5

minutes)

--Interactive Works (Flash, Director, MaxMSP/Jitter)

All submitted works must be able to run locally (on a harddrive) in a

web browser such as Netscape or Firefox. Please submit by sending an

email to <art@city-gallery.org> with a web link to your work.

For videos/animations, artists may upload a tiny version (180 x 120 is

OK) that can be viewed online; if accepted we will ask you to send full

screen version on CD/DVD. Interactive works can be "recorded" and

similarly uploaded. Interactive works must have an additional auto-run

mode.

Mobile Journeys Commissioning Program: Call for Proposals

Due Date: June 24

Mobile Journeys is pleased to announce the first Australian commissioning

program for mobile phone artworks. Between 10 and 15 commissions are

available for works in the following areas:

- short video

- sound

- text based

- locative

- social networking

- games

- performance

- installation

There is no required theme but the works must be specifically made for mobile

phones, working within the constraints and exploiting the opportunities of

this platform.

Commissioning fees will range between $750 for short video, sound and

text-based works to $2,500 for locative works and games. The exact amounts

will be determined on a case-by-case basis. All proposals will be assessed on

artistic merit and feasibility.

Selected artists are expected to develop their projects independently and

without significant technical assistance from Mobile Journeys.

The call for proposals closes on June 24. Applicants will be notified about

the outcome of the selection process by June 30. Mobile Journeys requires most

of the selected project to be completed by late July to be showcased at the

d>Art.O5 Exhibition at Sydney Opera House in August. Extensions on this

completion deadline will be granted on a case-by-case basis.

Emerging technologies such as wireless network, locative media, and pervasive computing have brought about new perceptions and social interactions in urban environment, transforming the ways we experience our cities. The concepts of space, time, and social relationship in urban environment are put in flux, while there are growing interests among communities of artists viewing city as social playground, public space, fluid canvas, and invisible layers of network.

Art Center Nabi is organizing an international workshop in partnership with the city of Seoul to initiate cultural and artistic projects exploring the theme of 'ÄòUrban Play and Locative Media.'Äô

On the cross platforms of art, design, technology, and social sciences, submissions are sought to deal with the issues of participation, play, process, and engagement in urban environment incorporating various locative and pervasive media technologies. Piksel[1] is an annual event for artists and developers working with open

source audiovisual software tools. Part workshop, part festival, it is

organised in Bergen, Norway, by the Bergen Centre for Electronic Arts (BEK)

[2] and involves participants from more than a dozen countries exchanging

ideas, coding, presenting art and software projects, doing workshops,

performances and discussions on the aesthetics and politics of open source.

Piksel05 will take place in Bergen october 16. - 23. 2005.

The development, and therefore use, of digital technology today is mainly

controlled by multinational corporations. Despite the prospects of

technology expanding the means of artistic expression, the commercial

demands of the software industries severely limit them instead. Piksel is

focusing on the open source movement as a strategy for regaining artistic

control of the technology, but also a means to bring attention the close

connections between art, politics, technology and economy.

One of the results of the past Piksel events is the initiation of the Piksel

Video Framework for 'interoperability between various free software

applications dealing with video manipulation techniques'[3].

Piksel05 will also feature the release of the Piksel LiveCD[4], a Linux

distribution containing the software used and developed at Piksel. The

package contains a suite of innovative audiovisual and artistic software,

free video plugins, and documentation from the past Piksel events.

The last two Piksel events has focused on live art/audiovisual performance,

but for Piksel05 the main focus will be an exhibition in collaboration with

Planned for July 2006, SCANZ follows in the tradition of Solar Circuit and Polar Circuits. These events consisted of the gathering of diverse artists, curators and producers involved in contemporary practice with projects and activities intersecting the environment in some way.

Proposed dates and call for proposals:

The dates for the residency and workshop are 3 July - 16 July 2006. The submission process for projects is a two stage process. Stage one is a call for registration of interest, due Monday 18th July 2005. Stage two is a call for developed projects.

Registration of interest

Artists, curators and producers are invited to submit proposals for possible projects during the two-week workshop and residency. We are seeking projects that enhance a sense of community and/or identity by either:

a) being collaborative projects across hemispheres, between nations or cultures;

b) referencing environmental response - to Taranaki, Aotearoa, New Zealand and Pacific Ocean in terms of human, natural and technological environment.

Three themes are central to SCANZ:

1. Fostering a sense of community and translocal media environment by enhancing links between northern and southern hemisphere practitioners.

2. Providing time, space and a unique environment for media artists to workshop, research and collaborate on creative methodologies.

3. To create an opportunity for artists to work together over a given period of time to develop new artistic content exploring the relationship between media and practitioner's response to an environmentally unique location - Taranaki, Aotearoa New Zealand, South Pacific. Environment here refers to human, natural and technological environments and the integration of these into diverse creative forms.

Taranaki is significant in terms of human environment - it was the site for a peaceful protest movement under the guidance of Te Whiti, and important colonial events and clashes; home to Chew Chong who played an important role in business development regionally and nationally; and is the location of the mountain - Taranaki, part of Maori mythology and the second highest mountain peak in the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand.

In the 21st century, there is an enormous need worldwide for a basic knowledge of management in the cultural sector. This knowledge fills the existing gap between general management theory and cultural praxis. It helps students, teachers, artists and practical art managers in translating management theory into successful cultural organizations. Intercultural network competences will be the key to the survival of artistic workers and art managers in a cultural Global Village that will be dominated by the digital revolution and artainment in a diversified context. Context of the workshop

The recent development for cultural and artistic bodies in the "new" socio-economic climate, the meaning of membership in the EU and other factors are increasingly essential to be dealt with when successfully managing cultural projects. It is pertinent to be well equipped with knowledge and the appropriate tools, as well as being well connected with like-minded cultural organization.

Prof. Giep Hagoort will introduce "interactive art management" as an increasingly important and necessary method, approach and tool, and suggest ways for its successful implementation. Among the core issues that will be reflected upon are cultural leadership, teamwork, strategy development etc., as well as the differences in the implementation of models for cultural management in the West as opposed to Central and Eastern Europe. He will examine the role of cultural entrepreneurs, that hold the key to the future in culture, and the need for Intercultural Network Organizations, that are essential to meet the challenges for the cultural, non-profit sector.

Workshop goals

To enable and stimulate the exchange of experiences between people who are active in the cultural sphere from the non-governmental sector, and who work with international co-productions, and/or in interdisciplinary projects.

To explore the practical implementation of the interactive art management with focus on practical projects and issues.

To discuss and explore the different models for implementing cultural management in the "West! versus Central and Eastern Europe. To reflect on specific situation in Central and Eastern Europe (such as the changes in society as in cultural policy after the entrance into the EU). To compare functional models and experiences from the West with Central and Eastern European perspectives.

To discuss perceptible chances, future challenges and visions for the cultural, non-profit sector. In this context, we will examine the notion of an European cultural "creative landscape".

This workshop aims at focusing on practical experiences and visions of the participants', in creative confrontation with Prof. Giep Hagoort from Utrecht School van den Kunsten, The Netherlands, a renown specialist in this field.

The participants are encouraged to co-create the specific learning process within this interactive workshop. Therefore, participants are expected to send a description of their project, either as concept or in development and/or to articulate their specific interests, needs and „hot" topics prior to the workshop.

Some projects will be chosen as case studies and will be presented, examined, analyzed and discussed. In this way, real situations are being worked on, reflecting the specific needs of the participants. Through this framework, different experiences will be shared and compared, questions raised and possible answers developed.

Through the presentation of the participants' projects, feedback is being provided not only from a renowned specialist as well as from the other participants. This "group brainstorming" creates an unique occasion for self- reflection and re-evaluation of the participant's approaches, attitudes, weak and strong points, allowing for fresh views and the development of realistic strategies for the management of a successful project.

Prof. Giep Hagoort will lecture and animate this workshop/laboratory and will bring qualified expertise of "Interactive art management" and "cultural entrepreneurship" as a theoretical framework for cultural (art) management strategies, international collaboration and exploration of practical possibilities of "survival" and sustainable development of ("independent") cultural organizations and projects. Analysis of their driving forces, their needs and conditions under which they survive, their strategies, successes and failures will be an important part of the discussions.

workshop description:

Mostly this would be an encounter of architects, sculptors, stage designers, gardeners, sociologists, meditative hermits, idlers, explorers, fishermen… about the 'problematic' fields of relaxation in the wide/real meaning of that word. Bechyne monastery, its gardens, rocky patios and close by surroundings will become the scene and the theme of the work(shop) itself. Under the lector's supervision we will explore the theme of relaxation and we will seek sufficient relaxing spaces. The work will include familiarization with the space, sketching and re/creating of such a places. Followed by testing.

Otis College of Art and Design seeks an accomplished professional to serve as Assistant Chair of the Fine Arts Department. This position will provide administrative leadership for the fine arts department and oversight and advisement for fine arts students.

The Assistant Chair will supervise a small staff to provide the necessary academic administrative support to this fine arts department of 150 students and 12 full time and adjunct faculty. Responsibilities will include: class scheduling and setting faculty teaching assignments; interviewing potential faculty; managing course enrollments; supervising part time faculty; developing the annual budget and providing monthly budget reports to the Chair; managing equipment purchases; interfacing with other campus departments; and serving on college-wide committees.

The Assistant Chair is also responsible for: organizing and participating in the department's student recruitment and retention activities; conducting the evaluation of transfer students; managing the student course enrollment process; oversight of academic records; and the referral of Fine Arts students to appropriate campus services or offices. The Assistant Chair will work with faculty and the Enrollment Management and Admissions offices to create a vital recruitment program for transfer students. He/she will work with faculty to ensure a meaningful and responsive departmental culture for fine arts students.

This position offers a leadership role in representing both the Chair and the Department internally to college constituencies, and externally to parents and the public. The Assistant Chair plays an important role in the development and the direction of the department, working with the Chair, program directors, and faculty on various academic and strategic planning initiatives.

Otis College of Art and Design offers BFA and MFA degrees in a variety of art and design professions. This position is ideal for those who seeking an academic administrative position in a diverse, creative and inspiriting learning environment.

The successful candidate will have a master's level graduate degree and at least five year's experience in academic administration at the college level. Familiarity with art and design fields is a plus, although the candidate need not currently be a practicing artist. This is a year-around full time position with pay commensurate to education and abilities. Ability to teach in his/her area of expertise. Applications are being accepted for three artist-in-residence positions at The Newark Museum Arts Workshop for the month of January 2006. The residency offers artists the opportunity to use the Museum's professional facilities for creating new work. An honorarium will awarded to selected artists. Special for the 2006 program will be the selection of an artist who is Newark-Based for one of the Residencies.

The Newark Museum Arts Workshop consists of three studios: one for weaving, fiber, textiles, and related areas of study; one for fine metals and enameling; and one that is open for a variety of disciplines. Artists will have available to them the resources of the Museum including the major collections, special exhibitions, The Educational Loan Collection (a repository of approximately 15,000 objects for study or visual reference)

and Library.

Eligibility:

Artists in the areas of fiber and textiles, clay, fine metals, jewelry and metalsmithing, enameling, sculpture, painting, photography, printmaking and works on paper may apply. In addition to having a professional exhibition record, artists must have some teaching experience either with adults or children.

How to Apply:

Send 10 slides, or 10 images on a CD, of your current work along with resume, artist statement, some notices of professional activity such as show cards or write-ups in the newspaper, and SASE.

Exhibition and Honorarium:

Artists' Residency work will be shown in the South Gallery for six weeks during spring 2006. An honorarium of $1000.00 will be paid at the conclusion of the Residency. This includes artist acting as juror to select the next round of Newark Museum Resident Artists for 2007.

This interdisciplinary exhibition responds to the cultural variants

inherent in the story that folklorists have classified as #510. One

version of this tale is known most commonly in the United States as

"Cinderella" although originally the tale can be traced to a Chinese

version entitled "Yeh-hsein" from 850 A.D. According to folklorists,

#510 is the oldest and most widely circulated tale of transformation

known to humankind.

The exhibition will include juried artists' books, murals

collaboratively designed by Chicago Public School students, and

artwork generated through partner schools in international exchange

projects. In conjunction with the exhibition, on-line teacher

resource information will include curricula developed by educators

from both the US and abroad that assess contemporary themes within

this age-old tale.

Call for Submissions/Contributions for Image-Blog

This is a call to all cultural producers and activists worldwide to submit and contribute photographs for an image-blog within the context the exhibition "Moving..On: Handlungen an Grenzen - Strategien zum Antirassistischen Handeln" in the Neuen Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst (NGBK) Berlin/Germany in August 2005.

The image-blog will be a daily updated view at the world with particular focus on migrants. We call on you to "arm" yourself with various forms of digital cameras (e.g. mobile phone cams, web cams, photo/video cameras), document signs of incarceration and exclusion, of discrimination and hardship of migrants, and send us the image files immediately via e-mail. We will filter received images and construct a daily global collage from the selections.

What we are looking for are the subtle signs that are globally embedded in the urban text structure. Here, we are interested in particular in re-interpretations, re-framings and subversions of the everyday societal and cultural superficialities. Photographed texts and signs, which have been manipulated, changed and defaced in order to create new meanings, would also function in this context.

In this project, we want to avoid the well-known image language of "victim photography" and rather show depictions of the conditions that turn human beings into victims in the first place. In this sense, the image as a selective representation of reality is not only suppose to document what is, but also show in its semiotic capacity what else there is.

Later in the final presentation - through the montage of a globally diverse image selection - we hope to have critically re-configured meaning to allow the viewer a deeper look into societies and the positions of the migrant within it. At least, that would be the objective of this project.

Experimental TV Center announces July 15 deadline for artists residency program.

The Experimental Television Center announces the next deadline for the Artists in Residency Program, July 15, 2005, for residencies between September 1, 2005 and January 31, 2006.

The Residency supports contemporary electronic media art projects. The studio workshop environment offers access to an image processing system, intensive individualized instruction and time for exploration and personal creative growth. Artists have an opportunity to study the processes and techniques of analog and digital imaging and to then use the system independently in the creation of new works. Participating artists have complete aesthetic and technical control over all aspects of the making process.

The image processing system is a hybrid tool set which facilitates interactive relationships between older historically important analog instruments such as colorizers and keyers, and new digital technologies using several G4s, a customized Doepfer A-100 system with sonic and control modules, software including Max/MSP, Jitter and Pluggo, as well as DVD authoring and editing software, DVD Studio Pro and Flash. Recording is mini-DV/DV and DVD. Svhs and 3/4" decks are also available. This rich electronic environment encourages artists to explore boundaries and intersections within narrative, documentary and social issue traditions as well as more experimental forms. Project: This two-part book addresses the global significance of money through a

series of essays accompanied by re-interpretations of paper currency from around

the world. Both components will address the relationship between wealth

accumulation, class, and culture. STCR is eager to accept innovative

submissions from visual artists and writers before July 31, 2005.

Whether personal anecdotes or fictional accounts, irreverent, or audaciously

absurd, all discourse submitted for the literary component must be poignant,

concise, and critical. Submissions must be 1000 words or less and submitted in

their entirety within the body text of the email and as a word attachment.

Submissions for the graphic element may depict family heritage or nationalism,

personal heroes or cultural icons. Entries are not limited by scale, technique,

This year, the International Short Film Festival 'interfilm' takes place for the 21st

time, a veritable meeting place for the international short film and video scenes.

More than 400 short films and videos will be shown during the six days of the

festival and an estimated 100 films will be nominated to compete in the

international competition. An international jury will award the 'interfilm Short

Independent Exposure is based in San Francisco and Houston. The program,
held continuously since 1996, has presented the short film, video and

2005 is the TENTH season of Independent Exposure, and we are looking for
works to include in our year-long celebration of ten years of
screenings. Works included will tour the globe via the International

Independent Exposure - Call for Works and Distribution through
Exhibition Information

For our Independent Exposure compilation series we accept short video,
film and digital-media submissions of 15 minutes or less and are
currently looking for narrative, humorous, dramatic, animation,
documentary, experimental, alternative, avant-garde, music videos,
erotic, gay/lesbian, and underground works.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: NO DEADLINE/NO FORMS

Please submit a VHS (NTSC, PAL, or SECAM), mini-DV (NTSC only) or DVD
(NTSC/PAL) clearly labeled with name, title, length, phone-number and
email. There is now a US$5.00 entry fee PER FILM for United States and
Canadian artists. Due to high postage costs, we are waiving entry fees
to filmmakers from outside the US and Canada. Please include any
supporting materials including photos! (preferably in digital format).
Due to the large amount of entries, we are unable to return your
submission but we will get back to you regarding your submission(s).

Microcinema will contact you before including any entry at its monthly
Independent Exposure screening in San Francisco and/or Houston. All
artists will be paid an honorarium when their work is screened in the
San Francisco and Houston shows. Artists also will qualify for a non-
exclusive Microcinema Distribution through Exhibition Agreement for

Piksel[1] is an annual event for artists and developers working with
open
source audiovisual software tools. Part workshop, part festival, it is
organised in Bergen, Norway, by the Bergen Centre for Electronic Arts
(BEK)
[2] and involves participants from more than a dozen countries
exchanging
ideas, coding, presenting art and software projects, doing workshops,
performances and discussions on the aesthetics and politics of open
source.
Piksel05 will take place in Bergen october 16. - 23. 2005.

The development, and therefore use, of digital technology today is
mainly controlled by multinational corporations. Despite the prospects
of technology expanding the means of artistic expression, the commercial
demands of the software industries severely limit them instead. Piksel
is
focusing on the open source movement as a strategy for regaining
artistic
control of the technology, but also a means to bring attention the close

connections between art, politics, technology and economy.

One of the results of the past Piksel events is the initiation of the
Piksel
Video Framework for 'interoperability between various free software
applications dealing with video manipulation techniques'[3].

Piksel05 will also feature the release of the Piksel LiveCD[4], a Linux
distribution containing the software used and developed at Piksel. The
package contains a suite of innovative audiovisual and artistic
software,
free video plugins, and documentation from the past Piksel events.

open CALL for PARTICIPATION

The last two Piksel events has focused on live art/audiovisual
performance,
but for Piksel05 the main focus will be an exhibition in collaboration
with
Hordaland Kunstsenter[5].
For the exhibition and other parts of the program we are interested in
submissions in the following categories:

1. Installations and interactive work
Audiovisual installations created and run solely using open source
software.
The theme for the exhibition will be loosely related to 'games' and the
gaming
experience.

2. Audiovisual performance
Live art realised by the use of open source software.

3. Software
Innovative artistic tools or software art released under an open
licence.

STRP art & technology festival : CALL FOR PROJECTS - Deadline 1 JULY

The first edition of the STRP festival will take place in
Eindhoven(Netherlands) between the 18th and 20th of November 2005. Its
focus is on the commonalities between art, popular culture and
technology. As part of the festival there will be performances, exhibits
and presentations in a historical space. STRP will take place on the
'holy' ground of the forbidden city of Philips, where in the 20th
century numerous technological innovations were made. A place where
Einstein worked at one point and where one of the most ambitious
amalgamations of the arts and technology took place: "Poeme
Electronique," a collaboration between the architect LeCorbusier with
architect/composer Iannis Xenakis, artist Jean Petit, composer Edgard
Varese and filmmaker Phillipe Agostini. Coincidence or not, Dick
Raaijmakers also was closely involved in this project. STRP gets its
inspiration from this amalgamation of technology and art.

PROJECT CALL

STRP is looking for projects/installations/proposals that fit under one
of the following themes:

1) Press "Start" : gaming, interactive installations and playful art
works, in which the public can take an active role in the experience and
realization of the work.

2)WE ARE THE ROBOTS : robots, robort art, installations.

Showcase at the Nottingham Riverside Festival:

August 6-7 2005

The Trent continues to disperse a million million histories intertwined. Nottingham Riverside Festival 05 will touch a miscellaneous audience of over 150000 with a stream of history, commodity and entertainment. Architects of Air/Duck races/Second WW exhibitions/film projects/Ska Qubano/Steam Engines/flashing dummies, will congregate as a few of many attractions.

In the lead up to EXPO festival of performance and live art work 05, graft will be developing a showcase of site responsive/considerate/specific work from emergent artists across the UK and beyond for the riverside. The showcase will aim to consider, involve and engage the audience of the festival whilst accounting for the nothing and the everything of the river side. graft are seeking preliminary ideas with which to mould the showcase, so multiple ideas/proposals from applicants are welcomed. graft will trace through these ideas and invite artists to merge into the framework. Call for Papers - TERRA INCOGNITA

For a long time, regions unknown to the civilized world were densely
populated by monsters, troglodytes or mythical beings. When the
exploration era began, these regions were rapidly depopulated. In 1375,
Abraham Cresques published his famous Catalan Atlas showing a wide blank
stripe. Its caption was as simple as it was frightening: "terra
incognita" - both a menace and a challenge to any mariner. For
centuries, "terra cognita" and "terra incognita" coexisted within the
same spatial coordinates, until it turned out that the mass to the south
of the known world - "terra australis incognita" as it was known to the
Ancients - wasn't the counterweight of the northern world populated by
another species of man. With polar expeditions, the void on the map
ultimately came to coincide with the white surface of the Antarctic. Now
that the terrae incognitae have been entirely engulfed by the meridians
of the known, there seems to be little space left for exploration.

What was the story of these unknown spaces? Which new landfalls are
possible, what new practices of partitioning are available? Some
web-pioneers have decreed the Net to be the last terra incognita. ATOPIA
8 will look for unoccupied zones, unfamiliar territories, unfurling a
path between concrete and imaginary, political and poetical mappings,
while obeying the rule of any explorer: follow the river, going upstream
from the coast. As no terra incognita is homogeneous, it has its
arteries too. We thus welcome submissions for papers approaching the
subject "Terra incognita" from a historical, philosophical, literary,
artistic or political point of view. Please send in a brief proposal
(max 500 characters) to atopia(at)atopia(dot)tk by June 30th 2005.
Contributions can be made in English, German, French, Italian or
Spanish.

ATOPIA aims at presenting emerging artists. A second contest is been
held for the artwork of the next edition. Visual art of any format but
strictly on the subject of "Terra incognita" may be submitted to

DEADLINE PROPOSALS NEXT PERIOD July 1, 2005

Starting in 2002, the media lab at the Netherlands Media Art Institute
is offering artists from The Netherlands and other countries the
possibility of carrying out investigations in three areas:
* Streaming media
* Wireless applications
* 3D applications

Artistic concept, innovation and cooperation are to be central in these
investigations. Preference will be given to research which makes use of
"open source" and that develops "tools" which will be available for
further use. Investigations that have an interdisciplinary character
will also receive preference. The artists will be working together with
Dutch universities and academies in the research.

--Facilities
An Artist in Residence will have at his/her disposal
Technical facilities, including assistance
Working budget
Housing
Technical specialists advise the participating artists during research,
experiments and production.

-- Results
The outcome of the research will be presented in an appropriate manner,
through exhibitions, discussions, seminars, publications and workshops.

--- Applications
Applications will be evaluated on the basis of a research proposal with
a work plan, which must include a formulation of the problem, and a
description of the resources needed (technical and facilities) and the
result. The artist should also submit a comprehensive biography, with
documentation on his/her previous projects. The final round of the
selection process will be based on an interview. The duration of the
work will depend on the research proposal, but should run an average of
three to six months.

Community Youth Arts (O TEAM) Program Director

Job Description

Otis College of Art and Design seeks an experienced youth development professional to direct a new digital arts school-to-college and school-to-workplace program for low-income Los Angeles youth aged 14 to 20 years. The O-TEAM (Otis Teens, Educators, Artists, and Mentors Initiative) is a community-based after-school academy that offers a multi-year, twelve-month sequential learning and support program for select youth who graduate into internship, workplace, or college opportunities. The program is initially planned for two community sites.

The director’s chief duties include initial startup and general supervision and administration of the program, recruitment and training of faculty and mentors, recruitment and services of youth, liaison with community partners and liaison with parents, program assessment, and reporting.

Candidacy for the position requires 1) five years of experience in professional management of youth development through the arts, youth-to-college, or youth mentoring programs, 2) minimum degree of a BA or BFA, 3) skill sets that include curricular design, youth recruitment and mentoring, faculty/mentors hiring/training/managing/supervising, community partnership building and agreement, excellent verbal and written communication, and ability to foster collaborative teamwork and maintain cooperative working relationships both internally and externally, 4) demonstrated ability to communicate comfortably across differences in age, socio-economic status, race, gender, and ethnicity, 5) ability to represent the college to students, the public, government and other external sources, and 6) ability to establish short-term and long range objectives and specify the strategies and actions to achieve them. A graduate degree is preferred, and experience as a former member of such progr ams is an added benefit for this position.

The selected candidate will have the opportunity to work with a group of inspirational colleagues within and outside of the college who are committed to youth development, and he/she will be instrumental in shaping an important initiative in the on-going life of Otis College of Art and Design. This is a year-around full time position with pay commensurate to education and abilities. The call for submissions and proposals at Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts is for artworks that address the following statement:

"Some years ago a client gave me a present, consisting of a small velvet lined box from a pen and made the words "Refuse To Die" out of alphabet pasta, sprayed black, wedged into the slit in the box. She presented it to me at a particularly difficult time in my life. It has made me smile, reminded me of friendships and helped me to find courage and optimism.

I want to consider submissions of works which address the topics of sustenance, hope and healing on the respective artists' journey through life. The dialogue requires a subjective voice, but may be in any medium of the artist's choice. Scale needs to be considered due to the size of the two gallery spaces at Propeller. Essentially the dialogue should revolve around a celebration of life, in spite of the darkness we struggle through to survive."

All media are welcome and the call is open to artists at the emerging or advanced stages of practice.

Reproduce and Revolt! is a graphic toolbox to be launched into the hands of

political activists. The book will contain over 300 new and exciting high-quality illustrations and graphics about social justice and political activism for activists to use on flyers, posters, t-shirts, brochures, stencils or any other graphic aspects of political campaigns. All the graphics will be bold and easy to reproduce, in addition to being open source/anti-copyright. The book will come with clear instructions on how to best utilize the images so as to improve the graphic qualities of political campaigns. It will also contain a short history of political graphics, an archive of political flyers and posters throughout history, as well as information about and a bibliography of further reading for all of the social justice issues the art will cover.

I am now collecting submissions of graphics, illustrations and art for the book, which will be published by Soft Skull Press in late 2006. I will chose for the book according quality of the image, reproducibility, and how well they convey the issues. Not everyone's submissions will be included. I will also be attempting to craft the book to represent the output of as diverse a group of artists as possible, across gender, race, nationality, sexuality, ability, etc. Reproduce & Revolt! is not intended to be a who's who of well known and successful political artists, this call is open to all levels of artists.

This is my second book with Soft Skull Press (www.softskull.com). My first, Stencil Pirates: A Global Survey of Street Stenciling, was released in July 2004. Stencil Pirates has gotten great reviews and is currently in it's third printing.

Here are the specifications for the images:

• Black and White/Greyscale.

• High Resolution: either original artwork on paper or high res digital images, minimum 600 dpi for greyscale, 1200 dpi for line art.

• Vector based .eps or Illustrator files are great, .tif and high quality .jpg are also acceptable

• A minimum of 6 inches x 6 inches.

• All mediums are accepted (various forms of printmaking, drawing, digital design, collages, etc.). The main factor is reproducibility.

Here are the catagories the images should be about (there will inevitably be overlap between the categories, these are simply guidelines and suggestions to help clarify and spark inspiration). In addition, the book will contain graphics in support of positive activities and graphics in opposition to negative aspects of the world, these are both included below (in alphabetical order, not order of importance!):

• Anti-Authoritarianism (including anarchism, hierarchy, direct action, mutual aid and more)

• Anti-Racism (including racial equality, institutional racism, attacks on youth of color, white privilege and more)

• Counter-Globalization (including corporate control, IMF, World Bank, WTO, capitalism, austerity, world debt, alternative economies and more)

• Education (including privatization, self-education, free schools, liberatory pedagogy, urban inequalities, military recruitment and more)

• Environment (including environmental justice, environmental racism, endangered species, animal rights, earth liberation, deforestation, strip mining, water rights, bio-tech, organics, community gardens and more)

• Feminism (including women's struggles, wages for housework, equal pay for equal work, equal rights, gender discrimination, women's liberation movement, sexual assault, men against sexism, fat liberation and more)

• Government (including bureaucracy, taxes, anti-cop, police brutality, elections and more)

• Health Care (including disability, mental health, AIDS, access, abortion, aging and more)

• Housing (including public housing, gentrification, private ownership, abandonment, homelessness and more)

• International Solidarity (including connections with movements around the world, borders, mutual aid, national liberation, Zapatista support, indigenous solidarity and more)

• Protest (including marches, protests, direct action, pickets, plowshares, armed actions and more)

• Queer Liberation (including gay, lesbian, trans, intersex, and bisexual struggle, gender binaries, queer bashing, sexual liberation and more)

• War (including anti-war, imperialism, militarism, state terrorism, war tax resistance, nuclear weapons, "collateral damage" and more)

I will craft about a dozen chapters out of these catagories, and each chapters will be filled with 30-40 new and exciting illustrations and graphics created by dozens of political artists, hopefully including you. A website of high resolution copies of a large number of the images in the book will also be created, and ideally I will include some of the graphics that don't make the cut into the published volume. People will be able to both photocopy the images or pull them directly into digital files via website.

I hope this project will both help radical activist projects, but also help boost radical artists by getting our work further out into the world. I hope to be able to pay a nominal fee for each piece published as well as give each artists access to books at 50% off the cover price.

All material must be submitted by October 31st, 2005.

The Not Still Art Festival was first organized in 1996

by video artist, Carol Goss, to provide a forum for video artists

and electronic animators working in non-narrative forms.

Over the years an amazing range of work has been

exhibited from distressed single camera video

to high end 3-D animation. The music and sound design

spans pure sampling to acoustic instruments.

The festival is organized by artists and is independent of

governmental and foundation grants -

i.e. free to exhibit what artists make -

not what funders think is relevant.

The one exception is the Presentation Funds Grant,

which Not Still Art has been fortunate enough to receive

in the past, and redistribute in the form of honorariums

to attending artists who travel to the festival.

This grant is provided by the Experimental Television Center with

funds

from the New York State Council on the Arts.

This is an invitation by the ISEA2006 Symposium and ZeroOne San Jose: A Global Festival of Art on the Edge to groups and individuals to submit proposals for an installation of augmented furniture, audio/video/software installations and interactive artwork for The C4F3 (The Cafe) during the ISEA2006/ZeroOne from August 5-13, 2006. The goal of The C4F3 is to create an active ambient space of augmented everyday objects that is not just an art gallery, a restaurant, or a chill space, but a new kind of project space where the whole environment has been rethought in terms of the capabilities of current technology. The Johns Hopkins University Digital Media Center in Baltimore, Maryland (http://digitalmedia.jhu.edu) will be posting a part-time position for a Multimedia Specialist with an emphasis in Audio and Computer Music. The unofficial description of the position is as follows:

Multimedia Specialist will instruct students in the use of digital audio hardware and software, maintain audio studio and circulating equipment, inspire students in the creation of music/audio related art. S/he will design and conduct workshops, create other teaching materials, make purchasing recommendations, and keep up with cutting edge multimedia technologies. S/he will assist student lab monitors by filling in with front desk duty and helping patrons with technically challenging projects. This position is structured to support a working artist who maintains an active creative life outside of the lab.

The successful candidate will be able to:

Learn new information independently and be comfortable experimenting with new technologies, have strong written and verbal communication skills, be organized and able to work efficiently while juggling multiple projects. Must have superior people skills and be able to take the initiative to reach out to students.

Required skills:

MS, MA or MFA, as well as previous teaching experience, thorough knowledge of sound recording and digital audio, knowledge of the following hardware and software: Digital Performer 4.5, PEAK 4.1, Adobe Audition. Adobe Creative Suite and Macromedia Tools. Extensive system-level knowledge of both Mac's and PCs. Knowledge of programming and expertise in MAX/MSP/Jitter is a plus.

Call for Submissions:

International Juried Show of Video Works.

In conjunction with Phatspace's ongoing new media projects; Ate and the

Phatspace Video Library, we are excited to announce our first International

Video Art Juried Show. We are seeking to exhibit a collection of new video

works from both national and international emerging artists.

All works submitted will be assessed by a judging panel consisting of artists,

curators, gallerists, critics and peers. 8 works will be awarded „Best in

Show‰ and will feature in a 3 week exhibition at Phatspace, all expenses paid.

The winning artists will also feature on a DVD publication that will accompany

the show.

All works submitted will be archived into the Phatspace Video Library, which

is a viewing lounge for new media arts open to the public during gallery

hours. This resource is often used by curators, students, artists and members

of the public and is an excellent opportunity to get your work seen. If

someone is interested in your work we will put them in directly in contact

with you.

If you are an artist working with video/new media art then we want to see your

work! Send a show reel on either DVD or Video formats (PAL please!) along with

a short bio and a paragraph or two about your work.

The postmark deadline is August 1st 2005.

The judges decision is final and the 8 exhibiting artists will be notified

early September.

The exhibition will run from October 27th to November 12th 2005.

Phatspace is an artist run gallery located in the heart of Sydney's

Darlinghurst area.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: Schwules Museum Call for Short
Films and Videos

The Schwules Museum (Gay Museum) in Berlin presents a
film and video screening.

How does one colorize the black and white stories of
the past? In what ways can we make history seem more
relevant, more interesting, and perhaps even sexier?
What are the stories of individuals with
self-confidence and persistence that are very timely
and applicable even today? How can we make history
compete with the loud and colourful sex-appeal of the
images in our present-day culture?

The Schwules Museum (Gay Museum) in Berlin is looking
for short films and videos to screen during the next
'Long Museum Night - Between War and Peace' on August
27, 2005. At the same time the museum will be
presenting two exhibitions: 'Homage to Thomas Mann,'
and 'Self-awareness and Persistence: 200 years of gay
history.' The Museum is assembling a selection of artist-submitted works
that preferably deal with the same themes as those present in our
exhibitions. During Long Museum Nights the Schwules Museum is visited by
more than 1,000 guests, so this is a great opportunity to show your film
or video to a large and diverse audience.

Deadline for entries: EXTENDED TO June 5th
(postmarked).
Acceptable formats: DVD (PAL and NTSC), miniDV, and
VHS (PAL only).
Duration of videos: Up to 30 minutes (longer videos
will be considered).
Entry Fee: None.
Prize Money: None.

VIPER INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION 2005
The Call for the renowned VIPER International Competition has been
launched with revised categories since 2003, considering the entire
spectrum of expression forms of the digital formats. At the same time a
unique forum for more and more extensive cross-media and innovative
projects has been established going beyond established generic
boundaries.

A renowned international jury selects from the submissions the winners
of the awards in each category. Irrespective of the category the best
Swiss work will receive the SWISS AWARD. Selected works and projects
will be presented during the festival.

IMAGINATION
is open to works and projects dealing with traditional and future forms
of the moving image.

Possible submissions include analogue and digital films/videos,
experimental films (including sound/video), 2D and 3D animations,
extended forms of traditional cinema, linear and non-linear narrative
image sequences, mobile and innovative screen formats, split- and/or
multiple-screen arrangements. They may be complemented by modes of
individual and collective interaction if wished.

PROCESSING
is open to works and projects that are characterised by processes and
live elements.

Installations or systems can be submitted that are devised to involve a
local situation and/or an audience actively, thus emphasising the
ability to interact and improvise when handling digital information
systems. This includes performances, immersive and hybrid (real/virtual)
environments,
'play- and social software' applications, 'smart objects', intelligent
and ambient systems as well as interface and interaction design.

TRANSPOSITION
is open to works and projects emphasising acting and communicating
within technologically defined networks.

Applications, prototypes and concepts can be submitted that use or
specifically apply network architecture that functions independently of
time and place. This includes for example location-related and
distributed systems (LAN/WAN/WIFI etc.), mobile computing, UMTS and GPS
applications, infra-red and Bluetooth connections. The key feature in
each case is an unusual and/or experimental use of technologically
defined network topographies.
