possibilities of art and technology, but using some of those same
innovative technologies, it is a celebration of the diversity found in
San
Jose and a platform for community members to participate.

BINARY KATWALK is an on-line exhibition space focusing primarily on work that is highly experimental and would benefit from a non-traditional exhibition space. The site is co-curated by Sindee Nakatani and Jeremy Hight. We are looking for new media work, for cross disciplinary works, for experimental works in particular mediums, and for works that are pushing into new horizons in form and functionality. We are looking for work ranging from hybrid new media narratives to experiments with digital imaging and photography. Each edition will have a new call for work and an invited artist's solo exhibition. We are currently taking submissions for our initial edition.

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON 'ÄòURBAN PLAY AND LOCATIVE MEDIA'Äô
ORGANIZED BY ART CENTER NABI
SEOUL, KOREA
OCTOBER 18-20, 2005
Emerging technologies such as wireless network, locative media, and pervasive computing have brought about new perceptions and social interactions in urban environment, transforming the ways we experience our cities. The concepts of space, time, and social relationship in urban environment are put in flux, while there are growing interests among communities of artists viewing city as social playground, public space, fluid canvas, and invisible layers of network.
Art Center Nabi is organizing an international workshop in partnership with the city of Seoul to initiate cultural and artistic projects exploring the theme of 'ÄòUrban Play and Locative Media.'Äô
On the cross platforms of art, design, technology, and social sciences, submissions are sought to deal with the issues of participation, play, process, and engagement in urban environment incorporating various locative and pervasive media technologies. We are looking for fresh and thought provoking insights and projects that are to reflect on but not limited to the critical issues as following:
.How new communication media opens up new ways to engage people in public domain?
.In what ways people participate and play in urban environment in dynamic formation of city?
.What kind of urban games are possible using emerging technologies? And what kinds of collective 'Äòvibes'Äô can be generated through these games?
.How can physical or virtual spaces in city be created, experienced and accessed by collaborative or competitive movement of people?
.How can diverse aspects of city whether cultural, historical, social, or personal be reflected and shared through participatory gestures?
.How can disparate neighborhoods or different communities be linked, interact or confront in playful gestures?
* Area in focus: Myung Dong in Seoul
We are also initiating calls that manifest and explore diverse aspects of metropolis Seoul, specifically focusing on Myung Dong area. Myung Dong is one of the representative sites located in central Seoul with its historic background, highest land value and concentration of commerce and people. The city government is undertaking a major redevelopment plan that possibly includes new zoning and new IT infra, in order to make Myung Dong as the symbol of 'ÄòNew Seoul.'Äô For our purpose, Myung Dong can serve as a test bed in exploring the theme of 'ÄòUrban Play and Locative Media'Äô with cultural and artistic approaches.

-- Piksel05 - october 16-23. 2005
-- call for participation
-- deadline 15. august 2005
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Piksel[1] is an annual event for artists and developers working with open
source audiovisual software tools. Part workshop, part festival, it is
organised in Bergen, Norway, by the Bergen Centre for Electronic Arts (BEK)
[2] and involves participants from more than a dozen countries exchanging
ideas, coding, presenting art and software projects, doing workshops,
performances and discussions on the aesthetics and politics of open source.
Piksel05 will take place in Bergen october 16. - 23. 2005.
The development, and therefore use, of digital technology today is mainly
controlled by multinational corporations. Despite the prospects of
technology expanding the means of artistic expression, the commercial
demands of the software industries severely limit them instead. Piksel is
focusing on the open source movement as a strategy for regaining artistic
control of the technology, but also a means to bring attention the close
connections between art, politics, technology and economy.
One of the results of the past Piksel events is the initiation of the Piksel
Video Framework for 'interoperability between various free software
applications dealing with video manipulation techniques'[3].
Piksel05 will also feature the release of the Piksel LiveCD[4], a Linux
distribution containing the software used and developed at Piksel. The
package contains a suite of innovative audiovisual and artistic software,
free video plugins, and documentation from the past Piksel events.
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
open CALL for PARTICIPATION
The last two Piksel events has focused on live art/audiovisual performance,
but for Piksel05 the main focus will be an exhibition in collaboration with
Hordaland Kunstsenter[5].
For the exhibition and other parts of the program we are interested in
submissions in the following categories:
1. Installations and interactive work
Audiovisual installations created and run solely using open source software.
The theme for the exhibition will be loosely related to 'games' and the gaming
experience.
2. Audiovisual performance
Live art realised by the use of open source software.
3. Software
Innovative artistic tools or software art released under an open licence.
Please send documentation material - preferably as a URL to online
documentation with images/video to piksel05@bek.no
Deadline - august 15. 2004
Use this form for submitting (or go to the online form at

Call for proposals: SCANZ (Solar Circuit Aotearoa New Zealand)
Url: http://www.witt.ac.nz/Content/sub/100005460.aspx
Planned for July 2006, SCANZ follows in the tradition of Solar Circuit and Polar Circuits. These events consisted of the gathering of diverse artists, curators and producers involved in contemporary practice with projects and activities intersecting the environment in some way.
Proposed dates and call for proposals:
The dates for the residency and workshop are 3 July - 16 July 2006. The submission process for projects is a two stage process. Stage one is a call for registration of interest, due Monday 18th July 2005. Stage two is a call for developed projects.
Registration of interest
Artists, curators and producers are invited to submit proposals for possible projects during the two-week workshop and residency. We are seeking projects that enhance a sense of community and/or identity by either:
a) being collaborative projects across hemispheres, between nations or cultures;
or
b) referencing environmental response - to Taranaki, Aotearoa, New Zealand and Pacific Ocean in terms of human, natural and technological environment.
Process
Download the registration of interest rtf from the web page given above. Fill out the form and email it to: scanz@witt.ac.nz.
The registration of interest proposal should include a short general description of the project only (half page preferred, maximum one A4 page). Project specifics can be resolved in the second call. The registration of interest file should be saved and sent as an rtf file.
A CV should also be submitted, which provides information relevant to the proposal. The CV should also be saved as an rtf and include all contact details and url'Äôs.
Up to three web suitable images (jpg or gif) can be submitted with the registration of interest, and video files up to 4Mb. This material should be related to the specific proposal rather than be samples of previous work.
Three themes are central to SCANZ:
1. Fostering a sense of community and translocal media environment by enhancing links between northern and southern hemisphere practitioners.
2. Providing time, space and a unique environment for media artists to workshop, research and collaborate on creative methodologies.
3. To create an opportunity for artists to work together over a given period of time to develop new artistic content exploring the relationship between media and practitioner's response to an environmentally unique location - Taranaki, Aotearoa New Zealand, South Pacific. Environment here refers to human, natural and technological environments and the integration of these into diverse creative forms.
Taranaki is significant in terms of human environment - it was the site for a peaceful protest movement under the guidance of Te Whiti, and important colonial events and clashes; home to Chew Chong who played an important role in business development regionally and nationally; and is the location of the mountain - Taranaki, part of Maori mythology and the second highest mountain peak in the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand.
